Japanese Gears Up to Support Jakarta with Advance Technology

A delegation from the Japanese Parliament's Environmental Commission visited the Jakarta Recycle Center (JRC) in Pesanggrahan, South Jakarta on Thursday (8/1).

We're very grateful to the Japanese Government

This visit aims to strengthen cooperation and strengthen friendly relations between Japan and Indonesia in the environmental sector, especially waste management.

Jakarta Environment Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto, welcomed and appreciated the arrival of the Japanese delegation as a form of support provided, including the construction of the JRC which is the result of cooperation between Jakarta Provincial Government and Osaki City Government, Japan.

"We're very grateful to the Japanese Government, especially the contribution through JICA in helping to build infrastructure and develop waste management systems in Jakarta," he expressed.

He added Jakarta continues to improve the quality of environmental management by learning from Japanese technology and experience.

"We're committed to continuously improving our waste management system by utilizing advanced and appropriate technology," he added.

He hoped that the cooperation could continue and be expanded to other areas such as air pollution management and wastewater management.

"We see many opportunities to strengthen synergies across various environmental sectors," he added.

Japanese Parliament's Environmental Commission Chairman, Shunsuke Mutai, expressed his admiration for Jakarta's waste management efforts. He was impressed with Jakarta's steps in addressing environmental challenges.

“This is real evidence that big cities can manage environmental issues effectively," he uttered.

He also highlighted the importance of decarbonization and waste reduction as part of efforts to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, as Japan has advanced technology that can help in waste management.

"We're ready to share this knowledge with Jakarta to support better environmental management," he explained.

He expressed the hope that Jakarta could be an example for other cities in the world in terms of waste management.

"Jakarta's success in handling waste will be an inspiration for other cities, both in Indonesia and globally, this shows Jakarta's potential to lead in waste management innovation," he added.

The visit ended with a tour around JRC, where the Japanese delegates witnessed firsthand the waste recycling process and the technology used. Through this visit, it is hoped that cooperation between Japan and Indonesia in the environmental sector can continue to grow and provide benefits for both countries.
